About this document

Khayal: Evolution and Aesthetic Insights by Deepak Dwivedi is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Khayal is a principal classical form of Hindustani music that incorporates elements of Dhruvapada, Thumri, and lighter forms like Dadra. It evolved from Dhruvapada to be more romantic and less rigid in structure. There are differing theories on the origins of Khayal, including that it developed from ancient Gitis, Prabandhas, or the medieval form of Rupkalapti. While Amir Khusro may have experimented with early forms of Khayal, there is no clear evidence that he invented the term or form as we know it today
