Carino, an Igorot, filed a petition for registration of ownership of 146 hectares of land that his family had possessed for over 50 years before the Treaty of Paris in 1899. The lower courts dismissed his petition. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Carino, finding that under Spanish law, possession of cultivated land for 20 years or uncultivated land for 30 years was sufficient to establish ownership by prescription.
