What is Malaysian Shadow Puppet Theatre Types about?

Shadow puppet theatre is an ancient form of traditional theatre in Malaysia. The stories are told by a puppet master who manipulates puppets seen in shadows projected on a screen, accompanied by an ensemble of musicians. There are four main types of shadow puppet play in Malaysia, each with distinct styles: Wayang Kulit Jawa draws from Javanese influences; Wayang Kulit Gedek mixes Thai and Malay folk styles; Wayang Kulit Melayu is a Malay court form; and Wayang Kulit Kelantan originates from Kelantan.
