Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino was a prominent Filipino politician who opposed the authoritarian rule of Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino was imprisoned when Marcos declared martial law but transformed into a committed democratic leader. He went into exile in the United States but returned to the Philippines in 1983 despite warnings that his return would be dangerous.
