This document reviews the Paleozoic plate tectonic history of the Middle East region. It identifies 10 major tectonic terranes that composed the area: the Helmand, Farah, Central Iran, Alborz, Sanandaj-Sirjan, Northwest Iran, Pontides, Taurides, Greater Caucasus, and Lesser Caucasus terranes. These terranes are proposed to have broken off from either the Gondwana or Pangea supercontinents. The evolution of three successive Tethys oceans is also described.
