With the present tendency away from translation and the greater stress on work in the foreign language, there is an obvious need for defining dictionaries of medium size with simple but accurate explanations. The lack of such a dictionary has been particularly felt in German studies. To fill this gap, a team of lex­icographers at the Dudenredaktion has spent two years compiling the present work, aided and advised at every stage by English and Swedish experts. It would be idle to pretend that such a dictionary is suitable for beginners, since a moderately large vo­cabulary is needed to define words accurately and with­ out over-simplification, although only those words are used in the definitions which also figure as headwords. This dictionary should therefore prove of greatest value to sixth-formers and university students when reading and writing in German. It has the added advantage that it need not be regarded as a ‘crib’.
