What is Cytotrophoblast and Syncytiotrophoblast Functions about?
The cytotrophoblast is the inner layer of trophoblast cells located within the placenta. It surrounds the fetal blood vessels and mesenchymal cells at the core of the placental villi. The cytotrophoblast can differentiate into extravillous trophoblast cells, which invade the uterine walls and remodel the maternal spiral arteries to facilitate nutrient exchange between mother and fetus. This remodeling allows for increased blood flow to support the rapid growth of the fetus.
