What is Optical Characterisation of Pigments for Colour Prediction in Compact Powders about?

Presence of dependent scattering in densely packed paritculate matter restrict the use of Kubelka-Munk theory. A different approach is used to apply K-M theory to mixtures of dry pigment powders to predict diffuse reflectance spectra. A theoretical expression is evolved to determine unit K-M absorption and scattering coefficients (optical data) of particulate system. Optical data of Phthalocyanine blue and Lona green pigment powders are determined using calibratein samples. The optical data determined by this method are consistent. The optical data determined by conventional method are erratically varying and also give negative scattering coefficients. The diffuse reflectance spectra of binary pigment powder mixtures determined by the proposed method agree well with experimentally measured spectra. The results show that the proposed method reduces error due to dependent scattering in application of K-M theory to predict diffuse reflectance spectra of admixtures of pigments.
