Kilroy was a shipyard worker during WWII who checked rivets and marked them with his signature. His marks spread as ships left shipyards fast without being painted over. Soldiers abroad saw the marks and spread the legend as a joke that Kilroy had already been wherever they went. After the war, James Kilroy from Massachusetts was identified as the original Kilroy based on shipyard records and riveters
