Th is was partly a matter of bringing the attention of the public at home to the importance of the India-Burma War and the achievements of its soldiers, but also to the extremely diffi cult conditions under which it was fought. In turn, it was expected that improved media coverage would lead to soldiers receiving messages of support from home and recognition in national and local media. Th ese eff orts at publicizing the war in Burma did pay dividends, especially during the successful recapture of Mandalay and the capital Rangoon in 1945. However, it was inevitable that the media refl ected the fact that the British and American public gave greater attention to the crucial events in Europe and the Pacifi c than to India and Burma. Public interest was, therefore, intermittent and even important events in Burma, such as the recapture of Rangoon in May 1945, could be overshadowed by events elsewhere.
