What is Le disparu about?

In a TGV rolling towards Brittany, François Contellec, the narrator, meets a former classmate, Pierre-Alain Jézéquel. The two men are now over sixty, and their reunion brings back the past. While François comes from a family of communist teachers, Pierre-Alain was the son of a bourgeois right-wing. These antagonisms did not prevent the two high school friends from spending holidays together in the Côtes d'Armor. In their Breton boarding school, they were both very marked by a young French teacher, Loïc Quéméner. We are in 1959. Quéméner, who managed to make love Rabelais and Molière to the most obtuse dunces, is called in Algeria. That's where he writes to his pupils to make them discover the reality of this war which does not say its name. The teacher is killed during a military operation. François decides to investigate, decades later, the circumstances of the death of Quéméner. Especially since Pierre-Alain, former army general, entrusts him with troubling elements. Quéméner, resolutely hostile to torture and who had the project of planting an olive grove in the desert region where he was installed, may well have hindered powerful local interests ...
