The issue raised by that case was whether the free exercise clause of the First Amendment ... guarantees religion-based exemptions from valid, secular laws. In other words, the issue was whether the clause gives individuals and groups the right to be excused from having to obey a law that is itself constitutional if its application to them would prohibit or burden the practice of their religion in some way. In the Smith case, the specific issue was whether the free exercise clause gives Native Americans the right to use an illegal drug during a religious ceremony.
