Metabolomics is an approach that quantifies molecules from endogenous and exogenous sources in biological specimens and then seeks to characterize biochemical pathways and metabolites relevant to nutritional and metabolic physiology [1]. In combination with diet pattern analysis, traditional nutritional status markers, anthropometry, genomics, epigenomics, and transcriptomics, metabolomics is increasingly considered as a phenotyping tool with promise to advance precision nutrition and lifestyle recommendations. In addition, insights from research using metabolomics can inform global public health efforts by examining ethnic differences in metabolism in different regions around the world. Longitudinal "big data" approaches promise to yield new discoveries in physiology, common disorders, and metabolism [2,3].
