An outbreak of Shigella sonnei infection occurred at an elementary school in Santiago, Chile in 1996. Initially 35 of 350 students who received school lunches became ill. Over the next 5 days, 189 additional cases appeared. Stool samples from 68 patients found 20.5% of samples from children and none from food handlers tested positive for S. sonnei.
