What is Finite Element Methods about?
## Finite element methods Finite elements provide an alternative numerical technique in contrast to finite difference techniques for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS (COMSOL Inc., 2018) is a commercial software package that can be used to numerically solve real-world ordinary and partial differential equations arising in various engineering applications. The Finite Element Method (FEM) or equivalently Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is widely utilized in well known engineering simulation packages such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, LS-DYNA, NASTRAN and a variety of free and open source tools. This tool is particularly useful if the problems are nonlinear where the coefficients of the differential equation may be a function of the independent variable (such as for the thermal conductivity depending on temperature in a heat conduction problem). The application of this tool is detailed in Section 7.1. All numerical problems presented in Chapter 6 are solved again. In this discussion, the use of the tool is demonstrated with an annotation of the graphical user interface for solution of a given problem in a step-by-step manner. This description therefore
