Charles Drew was an African American medical doctor and surgeon born in 1904 in Washington D.C. who was the first director of the American Red Cross blood banks. He studied at McGill University under Dr. John Beattile and became interested in blood transfusion, discovering that while blood types differ, everyone has the same type of plasma. For his work organizing blood banks in Europe and the Pacific during World War II that saved many lives, he received the 1944 Spingarn Medal from the NAACP.
