What is Score Equating: an Aspirational Form of Score Linking about?

The goal of score equating is to produce interchangeable scores from different editions of the same test that are assembled from a common blueprint and administered under a standard set of measurement conditions. Equating adjusts for minor differences in the difficulties of alternate test forms so that interchangeable scores can be produced across the forms. We address what distinguishes score equating from other forms of aligning score scales. All methods for linking test scores include scores on two tests obtained by one or more samples of test takers, obtained via data collection methods, and one or more procedures for computing the transformation function from one score scale to another. All methods of observed score equating specify a population of test takers to which the test linking is to be applied. Our focus is on observed score equating because true scores are unobserved and consequently of primarily theoretical interest only. After describing score equating and what is needed to produce equated scores, we mention other forms of score linking that use the same procedures that score equating uses but fail to achieve interchangeable scores.
