Stick–slip Motion for Two Coupled Masses with Side Friction by B. Wikieł; J.M. Hill is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.

What is Stick–slip Motion for Two Coupled Masses with Side Friction about?

A mechanical system consisting of two masses which are connected by an elastic spring and which is free to move vertically in a cylindrical tube is considered. The model assumes that between the masses and the wall, Coulomb friction applies and the motion of the system is examined with a view to examining the phenomena of stick}slip motion. Generally, stick}slip phenomenon arise from the assumed nature of the Coulomb frictional force, which is a signum-type function. The multi-valuedness of the frictional law at zero relative sliding velocity presents the major source of the computational di$culties, which can be avoided by a proper physical interpretation of the frictional phenomena. Some limited mathematical analysis of the present model is possible, which provides a good deal of insight into some of the relevant physical parameters. However, in view of the large number of cases and the correspondingly varying motion of the system, the mathematical analysis rapidly becomes too complicated and further progress can only be achieved through a numerical solution. A number of illustrative examples of the system behaviour are presented.
