IMAX is a large format film and projection standard created by IMAX Corporation. IMAX screens can be significantly larger than conventional screens, up to 72 feet wide and 53 feet high. The IMAX format was developed in the 1960s and the first permanent IMAX theater opened in 1971. Variations include IMAX 3D and digital formats. Over time, IMAX has expanded to over 300 theaters worldwide showing large-format films and educational documentaries.
