The 493rd Fighter Squadron at RAF Lakenheath received seven F-15C aircraft from the disbanding 53rd Fighter Squadron based in Germany. The 53rd FS was chosen for disbandment to provide surplus aircraft to existing squadrons to meet the new policy of 24 combat-ready aircraft per squadron. The F-15C is an all-weather tactical fighter designed for air superiority with powerful engines, high maneuverability, and advanced avionics and weapons systems.
