What is Shawqi, Andreas Capellanus and the Courtly Tradition about?
## An Experiment in Reverse Analogy When the Egyptian writer Ahmad Shawqi died in 1932 he left behind him a formidable literary legacy and an indelible mark in the world of letters 1 . In the course of his career, he enjoyed the dual privilege of royal patronage and grand media coverage. However, the 'poet of princes' and 'prince of poets' (as Shawqi was known with the epithets) cannot be merely lumped up with some turn-of-the-century literary aristocracy. Nor are the present parallels with Andreas (the chaplain of Marie de Champagne) and the courtly tradition meant to yield to that critical temptation. Moreover, despite the international nature of his (Franco-Egyptian) education, (European) travels, (Spanish) exile, (Arab, Circassian, Turkish and Greek) ancestry, convenient analogies with contemporaneous Western literary trends should be cautious. One of the finest products of his dramatic talent is his Majnun Laylct. A great deal of scholarship on the play comparing it to European traditions focus, often uncritically, on its indebtedness to classicism, Romanticism and Realism. Many of the studies ignore the thematic convention of hubb al-udhri inspite of its obvious relevance eve
