There are 3 main types of estoppel: 1) Estoppel by representation/records which prevents inconsistent arguments based on prior representations of fact. 2) Promissory estoppel which prevents a promisor from not honoring a clear promise that induced detrimental reliance. 3) Proprietary estoppel which prevents a party from complaining about actions they previously encouraged or acquiesced to that resulted in losses for another party.
