1. Stars form from clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. Gravity causes the clouds to collapse and spin, forming a dense core at the center that becomes a protostar. 2. Once nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium begins in the core, the protostar becomes a main sequence star. Most stars, including our Sun, spend over 90% of their lifetime as main sequence stars. 3. At the end of their lives, lower mass stars expand into red giants then shed their outer layers, leaving behind a dense white dwarf core. More
