What is Photon Based Fractionated Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery for the Treatment of Chordomas and Chondrosarcomas: A Multi-Institutional Review about?
Purpose/Objective(s): The aim of this study was to assess the outcome of patients with primary spinal myxopapillary ependymoma (MPE). Materials/Methods: Data from a series of 85 patients with spinal MPE were collected in a retrospective multicenter study. There were 35 female and 50 male patients, with a median age of 36.9 years (range, 8.9-77.8). The majority of MPE were localized to the lumbosacral region (n = 39). Other localizations were the thoracolumbar (n = 38), cervicothoracic (n = 4) and cervical to sacral (n = 4) regions. One patient presented with a synchronous brain metastasis at diagnosis. In total, 40 (47%), 43 (51%), and 2 (2%) patients underwent gross total resection, subtotal resection, and biopsy only, respectively. Radiation therapy (RT) was administered to 47 (55%) patients postoperatively. Median administered dose was 50 Gy (range, 25.2-59.4). A median of 27 fractions (range, 14-33) of 1.5-2.3 Gy (median, 1.8) were delivered. No patients received chemotherapy during the initial treatment of the disease. Clinical variables including age, sex, tumor location, as well as treatment variables, including extent of surgery, postoperative RT, and radiation dose were an
