Birds of Mountain and Moorland , the second volume in the series, includes all the eagles, falcons, buzzards, vultures and hawks that have appeared in Europe. And apart from the spectacular birds of prey, this volume also features bird families such as the grouse and the pheasants, partridges and bustards, the gallinules, coots, rails and cranes. Each species is described in detail, with information on its feeding habits, nesting, migration and ecology. The magnificent colour photographs are complemented by illustrations showing varying seasonal plumage and comparing the birds in flight, when they are more likely to display distinctive markings. Maps show the world distribution of bird families, and where individual species are to be found in Europe, including their breeding grounds and winter and migration range. As John Gooders explains in his introduction, several of the bird families included here have had to struggle for survival. Man's invasion of their natural habitats has in many cases drastically depleted their numbers. This volume therefore stresses the importance of conservation as well as providing a full, systematic survey of the birds of mountain and moorland.
