What is Tense, Aspect and Time Location about?
In language, time location is effected by two means: (i) the system of tense and aspect, (ii) time adjuncts. A joint description of these two systems is given within a general framework which has been designed for a more general purpose: the study of the operations that lead to the attribution of a referential value to an utterance. This theory, which stresses the importance of the speaker and has an operator of location as one of its primes, is briefly sketched. A hypothesis on the nature and function of time adjuncts is provided. The perfect form and its compatibilities with the adjuncts are given particular attention. The differences between time adjuncts before and ago, after and since are accounted for in terms of their relation to the speaker and of their locational structure\*
