What is Mystery of a Doubtful Inscription about?
In Klio XXIII p. 20f. I stated that an inscription published by Professor Calder (Rev. de Philol. 1912 p. 75) from the foundations of the Seldjuk Palace at Konia, is partly a forgery, but that "there is some basis of reality underlying it", and that "further discovery may reveal the truth". The discovery has now been made. The way in which the forgery was concocted is clear, and the •underl3äng basis of reality proves to be the most interesting momiment of Iconium (or Claud-iconium as it was re-named). Besides the suspicious circumstances mentioned already we note that Octavius v7zeyQay.-ev, but his name is placed at the beginning immediately after the date. The vjcoygoKpcov should come at the end. Also the document purports to be a quittance or acknowledgment (äTzsxco); but nothing is acknowledged; and no amount is stated. The document pretends to be complete, dated and signed: but Dessau wrote that he has long been asking what is the meaning of the document, w-hether in the 20th or 2nd Century. The answer is that there is none: the forger had no meaning in his mind. Again, why should a quittance be inserted on a limestone block, and ordered to be kept in the xqeocpvMxiov ? A tile
