even suggest that the Nimrud-ivory chariot represents reality, and that it provides us with documentation on the chariot in a relatively uninformative period-the late ninth and early eighth centuries B.c.-when there are no chariot representations in major art in Assyria. It might indicate that the rectangular chariot box with the rear elevation, appearing first on monumental art under Tiglath-Pileser III, actually came in earlier, when it was still combined with ninth-century equipment, and that we have here a unique illustration of this transitional period. Yet, for the reasons pointed out above, this potentially interesting deduction does not seem to us justified.
