The Amul cooperative was formed in 1946 in response to exploitation of milk farmers in Gujarat by the Polson dairy. It organized local farmers and began collecting and processing milk directly, providing fair prices to farmers. The cooperative was further developed by Dr. Varghese Kurien and H.M.
