In 1868, a hoard of over 1,166 counterfeit coins from 1594-1725 was discovered in Denmark. The coins were found buried together wrapped in fabric. They included imitations of Danish, Norwegian, German, Austrian, and Bohemian coins. The hoard was analyzed and specimens of each of the 28 counterfeit types were preserved in a collection. The hoard provides evidence of large-scale counterfeiting in northern Europe during this period, though no other records of the operation were found.
