Māui, a clever demigod, wanted to give people more daylight to complete their tasks. He devised a plan with his brothers to weave a giant net and catch the sun as it rose. When the sun awoke, Māui and his brothers pulled with all their might to restrain it. Though angry and struggling, the sun agreed to slowly cross the sky after Māui threatened it with his magical jawbone. From then on, the sun rose and fell slowly, providing people with more daylight.
