After de Broglie's seeming capitulation and Bohr's apparently successful countering of Einstein's arguments at the Solvay conferences of 1927 and 1930, the "Copenhagen interpretation" of Bohr, Heisenberg, and Born was accepted by the majority of working physicists. Interest largely turned away from fundamental questions of the nonrelativistic theory to applications such as the physics of atomic nuclei, electrons in metals, chemical forces, cosmic rays, beta decay, and the problems of extending Dirac's quantum electrodynamics to a full theory. However, Einstein was not satisfied and continued to work on the problem of whether quantum mechanics was indeed complete. In 1931, with Tolman and Podolsky, he published a short letter in Physical Review. 1 The issue was whether the uncertainty principle applied to the past, since certain authors had erroneously suggested that it did not.
