The Liturgy of the Hours originated in the early centuries as Christian community prayers outside of Mass. In the sixth century, its structure was organized in monasteries and it was called the Divine Office. Later, in the eleventh century, an abbreviated breviary was developed for itinerant monks. In 1970, Pope Paul VI published documents that opened the Liturgy of the Hours to all the baptized.
