What is Self-Portraits: Tales from the Life of Japan's Great Decadent Romantic about?
Osamu Dazai was primarily a short story writer. Though he employed an astounding variety of techniques, styles, and voices throughout his career, a good one-third of his fairly prodigious output took the form of what might be called, for lack of a better term, "autobiographical fiction" -first-person stories fashioned out of the raw material of his life. The purpose of this collection is simply to present some of the best of these works as a roughly chronological series of self portraits, with all the artistic leeway that implies. Some of the stories are more clearly fictional than others, but all of them are informed by the realities of the author's life -realities with which Japanese Dazai fans are well acquainted- and familiarity with the basic events of that life can only serve to increase the reader's enjoyment.Translated and introduced by Ralph F. McCarthy
