Communication: A novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) able to undergo reversible, repeatable, photoresponsive deformation without heat by simply switching UV irradiation is reported. The semi-IPN was made from a poly(vinyl ether) network bearing azobenzene groups and a linear polycarbonate. The rate of deformation and response to switching was unprecedented, in the order of a few seconds, and is attributed to a reversible change between the highly aggregated and dissociated states of the azobenzene groups.
