The pilgrims left England on the Mayflower in 1620 due to religious persecution and arrived at Plymouth Rock after a difficult 66-day voyage. During their first winter in America, many pilgrims died from illness and lack of food. The following year, the pilgrims had a successful harvest thanks to the help of local Native Americans. To celebrate and give thanks, the pilgrims held a three-day feast and invited the Native Americans to share in the first Thanksgiving. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated annually
