What is Foreword about?

This special issue is based on papers presented at the 35th International Conference on Computers & Industrial Engineering held in the magical city, Istanbul, Turkey on 19-22 June, 2005. At the conference, participants presented 380 papers from over 40 countries. The some industrial companies, such as Ford Automotive Company and Siemens were also made sponsors for sponsored the conference. In addition to sponsorship, the Ford Automotive Company also introduced their lean based manufacturing system in a special session. The theme of the conference was Design and Management of Production Systems. In order to generate an efficient production system design, the designer must begin the design process by stating the goals in terms of ''what we want to achieve" in the light of customer's needs. Changing customer needs causes changes in the design of production systems. The theme of the conference derives its significance from the important role. Therefore design and management of production systems play so important, however such role will assume more importance as become more so in the future due to the customer's changing harder needs become more demanding.
