What is Dolphin Sleep Patterns Explained about?
Dolphins have unusual sleeping patterns compared to humans. Newborn dolphin calves do not sleep at all for the first few months, requiring their mothers to stay awake constantly to keep them safe. Dolphins also need to return to the surface every 20 minutes to breathe, so they developed the ability to sleep with half their brain awake to allow for rest while still being conscious enough to safely surface. By alternating which half of the brain rests, dolphins can get the sleep they need while safely caring
