Francisco Baltazar y dela Cruz, known by his pen name Francisco Balagtas, was a prominent Filipino poet considered the Tagalog equivalent of Shakespeare. His defining work was the epic poem Florante at Laura, which explored themes of good governance, respect for elders, and nationalism while also criticizing Spanish colonial abuses in the Philippines through allegory.
