Chromatography is a technique used to separate mixtures into individual components. In paper chromatography, a mixture of plant pigments is placed on chromatography paper and the paper is dipped in a solvent, allowing the different pigments to move across the paper at different rates based on their chemical properties. This separates the pigments, including chlorophyll which is green, and other colored pigments like carotenes which are yellow-orange and xanthophylls which are yellow.
