In 2010, China and the six founding members of ASEAN established a new free trade area aimed at eliminating 90% of imported goods between member countries. This created the largest trading bloc in the world comprising nearly 1.9 billion people across China and Southeast Asia. While there are clear economic gains from more open trade, some Southeast Asian countries have warned that certain domestic industries may not be able to compete with Chinese companies and could lose jobs as a result.
