Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 CE and Islam has been linked to the city ever since. It was in a cave near Mecca that Muhammad began receiving revelations from God through the angel Gabriel. After facing persecution, Muhammad and his followers migrated to Medina but continued conflicts with Meccan tribes. In 630 CE, Muhammad conquered Mecca with an army of 10,000 men.
