What is Respiration and Visible Development of Individual Grasshopper EGGS following X-Irradiation about?
A N IMPORTANT step in the investigation of biological ef- fects of X-rays is to determine whether the materials and methods employed will yield results which will correlate the extent of the effect with the amount of the irradiation. Many investigators have selected one particular biological response and have measured the variation of this character at a certain time or stage in the experiment. The percentage of viability at a particular time after irradiation has been used as one end-point, and the results have been fairly constant. For example, Packard (1926) and Failla and Henshaw (193 I) have used the percentage of hatching of Drosophila eggs. Koidsumi (1930) studied the killing-rate on developing and adult Dacus flies. This method, as stated by Packard (i93i), gives results which indicate that effects of X-rays on the viability of organisms are subject to the same variation as are biological responses to other external agencies. Henshaw (i932a) has recently shown that developing Drosophila embryos were especially radiosensitive at gastrulation. Therefore, unless the material is homogeneous as to the developmental condition of the individuals, this biological variation may be e
