Tanzania has amended its biosafety regulations to allow GMO research activities to be exempt from strict liability. However, strict liability still applies to all other GMO activities such as importation, transport, release and commercial sale. The amendments add definitions for research, researcher, confined use and contained use. Any experimental releases other than confined or contained use research still fall under strict liability.
