A moving iron instrument has a non-linear scale that is cramped at the lower end and expanded at the upper end. Using irons of appropriate shape and size can produce a more complete linear scale in spring controlled moving iron instruments. Eddy current damping cannot be used for moving iron instruments as the eddy currents induced in the iron core would cause power losses and affect the instrument readings.
