A butt joint simply joins two pieces of wood end to end. It is commonly used in wall framing but can be strengthened with glue or screws. A mitered butt joint joins boards at an angle rather than squarely for a more aesthetic appearance. A dado joint cuts a slot in one board to receive the end of another, as seen in bookcase shelves. A mortise and tenon joint is a classic and strong method using a slot cut into one piece and a corresponding tenon cut on the other.
