St. Josephine Bakhita was born in Sudan in 1869 and experienced kidnapping and slavery as a child. She bloomed in Italy with the Daughters of Charity, where she was known as "Mother Moretta". Sold into slavery in Sudan, Bakhita found kindness when bought by an Italian consul. She accompanied the consul back to Italy and stayed with his friend
