What is Positional Encodings Anc about?

This document investigates the role of positional embeddings (PEs) in Vision Transformers (ViTs) and their influence on internal spatial representations and robustness against distribution shifts. It introduces the Spatial Similarity Distance Correlation (SSDC) metric to analyze how different PEs affect representational geometry, revealing that while ViTs can develop spatial structure without PEs, the presence of a stable positional reference enhances robustness. The findings suggest that the specific encod
