The Boys and Girls Club of America was founded in 1860 as the Boys Club in Hartford, Connecticut by four women to focus on character development for boys. By 1906 many boys clubs connected nationally, forming the Federated Boys Clubs. In 1956 it received a Congressional charter and changed its name to the Boys and Girls Club of America in 1988 to serve both boys and girls.
