What is Measurement of Sulfate Reduction in Wetland Soils about?
Sulfate (SO 4 2-) reduction in wetland soils is a key anaerobic terminal electron accepting process, particularly in brackish and marine wetlands. The H 2 S produced from this process can be deleterious to wetland plants, and the reduced Fe sulfide minerals (FeS, FeS 2 ) produced are important controls on the balance of Fe and S in coastal ecosystems. The measurement of SO 4 2-reduction requires the collection of intact core sections, addition of a radiotracer ( 35 SO 4 2-), and recovery of both dissolved and particulate reduced 35 S species. The key advance in this measurement has been the use of acidic Cr(II) to recover reduced S from pyrite (FeS 2 ). Design criteria for experiments to measure SO 4 2-reduction in wetland soils include consideration of the duration of incubations, control of temperature, decay of the radiotracer, and efficient recovery of reduced S.
